Solvent Properties of Water
- A liquid that is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances is called a solution.
- The dissolving agent of a solution is a solvent and the substance dissolved is the solute.
- An aqueous solution is one in which water is the solvent.
- Water is the most versatile solvent known.
- Water is an excellent transport medium because many molecules can dissolve in it.
- Cells transport materials by diffusion in a watery cytoplasm.
- Plants dissolve sugars, hormones, and defense chemicals and transport them through watery liquids in their veins.
- In animals, the heart pumps watery blood through vessels, thereby transporting molecules like O2, CO2, hormones, nutrients, urea and more.
